Seed rounds represent the earliest stage of fundraising in a startup's life cycle. In these rounds, startups offer tokens to early backers. The funds acquired from a seed round are usually directed towards market research, product development, or preparing a prototype.
Public Rounds
Once a crypto startup passes its seed round, the next major step often involves a public round. This is where the company opens up its fundraising to the broader public, often via a token sale. In essence, it's a way for the company to raise more capital by selling tokens to a larger pool of investors. These tokens usually come with some utility within the startup's ecosystem.
Initial DEX Offerings (IDOs)
IDOs are a relatively recent innovation in the field of crypto fundraising. They are conducted on decentralized exchanges (DEXs), which differ from traditional exchanges in that they allow for direct peer-to-peer trading without the need for an intermediary. An IDO allows a project to list their token directly on a DEX, enabling immediate trading. It represents a fairly democratic way of raising capital as it allows anyone, anywhere, to participate.

While seed rounds, public rounds, and IDOs are all methods of fundraising, they differ in terms of accessibility, immediacy, and the level of decentralization.
Accessibility: Seed rounds are generally limited to a select group of early backers, whereas public rounds and IDOs are open to a larger pool of investors.
Immediacy: Tokens from seed and public rounds are usually subjected to a vesting schedule, meaning investors receive them over time. In contrast, tokens purchased in an IDO are typically available for trading immediately.
Decentralization: Public rounds may still involve some level of central control by the fundraising entity, whereas IDOs, conducted on decentralized exchanges, embrace the ethos of blockchain by providing open, permissionless participation.
